How would I go about securing a 6.5 version then? I installed sec 3 patch on it.

My original site is on 6.5 and gets hacked a lot so I was going to upgrade it to 7.9

It looks like there are so many secruity holes, i don't know where to start. And im afraid previous hackers might have left back doors.
