Did you upgrade to 7.7 first or go directly from 7.6 to 7.8?

No, I upgrade to 7.8 directly.

I don't recommend running any version past 7.6, there are just too many security issues with 7.7-7.9. I would stick with 7.6 and use the 3.1 patches, or even better use Ravens fully patched 7.6 version.

You're not able to do this I believe. None of the patches are cumulative meaning you have to install them one at a time and cannot skip versions. It's also a really good idea to follow the readme's included in each because there are different security issues addressed in each new version.

That is correct. You upload the new version overwriting the old files (after you've fully backed up your site of course), then you need to run each upgrade script in succession [in your case 7.6-7.7 then 7.7-7.8].
