You can play with that session setting if you want, but I don't think you will see any positive effects from it.

I use CuteFTP adn manually edit the files then re-upload. But I find it easy myself.

I'm not sure of an FTP client that will allow you to edit php files remotely though...maybe someone else knows of something.
