Web Hosting what are we paying for ?
Web Hosting what are we paying for ?

An off topics subject, maybe , anyway I was wondering what exactly are we paying for :

Whats the best options to look for, is more space better or too much no good ?

How is bandwidth worked out against a give space allocated. 10% ?

Database options : how many do you really need, 1 ?

Would it be a fair comment to say "90% of websites on the web have some kind of a database.

Subdomains is that a good option, I know the principal of it, but do webmasters actually use Subdomains, why not just open a /folder ?

My own site forgetting about the games is about 18mb, half the stuff I dont use  I was wonder as were all webmaster ( of some kind in here lol ) how big is your basic site/s & have you ever gone over the bandwidth ?

----------------------

Also if your a newbe as we all where at some point (well I still am ) and your thinking of starting a site somewhere, do you know what you should be looking for or would you base your decision on popularity ?

Let me be the first to reply

I have a 500MB server place (which I get for free) and it is enough, I don't get it full although I do not have a site running atm. I NEED 10 db's, just for coding and testing different cms's.
And I do use the subdomains option, makes it very easy for me to organize

Hmm 10 db's 8O how do i follow that up :? I guess I would put you down as a developer, outside the norm

If you had to pay for such site specs, what you talking about €12 a month maybe ?

Space : 500mb
Bandwidth : 5000mb
php
perl

database/s 10 , what are they worth €1 each ?

I'm using the VBasic plan, but I asked for a DB upgrade (he is a good friend of mine and we help each other out )
It is: 500MB storage
10GB bandwidth
PHP
Perl/CGI
5 DB's (upgraded to 10)
And that's for $5 a month

I need the db's to get all my scripts running (I use a different db for every script I have, just to keep it simple to backup and restore etc!)

i have my own hosting service but my parent company is
https://www.mdwebhosting.com.au/

Most of there servers are in the US and have very good service.

I have about 8 site all up....
2gig storage 25gig bandwidth.
(most ive used is 6gig per mth and using 1 gig of storage)

What do you get with it?

Pritty good deal i believe.
List of what u get in link below.
http://www.mdwebhosting.com.au/webhosting/

How much space do you need?

This depends on what your into and have on your site.
Images and Forums are not to bad but with games and keeping Updates and Patches it starts adding up quick.

1 squad site im hosting only used 60mb space including members pic's, forums, basic downloads...1 email and 2 MySQL's.
They could cut it back to under 50mb's all up if they had too but just as an example....

How many DataBases?

Most sites (that i use) have about 3-5 DB's.
When i first install something new im not sure of, i make a new DB to be safe and test on that.
Plus if something was to happen to one of the databases you still have the other ones up. Might not sound like much but it say your DB for the Games Ladder went down your site might still be up because not everything is loaded into the one.

I forgot to add the difference between paid and free sites is

Advantages of Paid Hosting.

1. No POP UP'S
2. Can get backups from Host
3. Unlimited MySQL's
4. Unlimited Email Account
5. Unlimited Subfolders
6. Security
7. Privicy
8. SPAM Protection
9. Able to run things like php and a mountain of other programs available as add ons

The list goes on and on....
Think about it, for a few dollars a week you can have it all safe and secure with out the headaches of worring if you can install this or that.

Depends on what you have on your site (downloads, images, music) and how poplur it is (for things like forums).
I have a ton of text information (The text of several books and more). so I need room for that. Since I did go for a lot of space, I also have room for other things (like a book review module that holds book cover graphics).

Don't know - I don't use a lot of bandwidth, other than my own FTPing

I have 4. Currently using 1 for the Nuke site, a seperate 1 for the forums and 1 for the weblog. That gives me one to play with, such as for other programs and testing.

Maybe 90% of business sites. Personal sites would be much lower.

I have 5 subdomains. Again, 1 for the nuke site, 1 for the forums, and 1 for the weblog. Also 1 for personal stuff and 1 for other things, like testing programs.

I think (not sure) that subdomains are safer for security. It's harder to jump a subdomain boundry than a simple folder boundry.

Never gone over bandwidth, but I don't have a real popular site.

I have 300MB of space. the 5 subdomains, 1 database (default - one time fee of $5US for each additional database, space comes off 300MB), Unlimited email accounts (space comes off 300MB), 20 mailing lists and 5000MB transfer. All for around $6US a month. Servers are in Hong Kong and I send payment to Hungary. Not sure were support is located (but they are fantastic - answers within minutes and always very helpfull). Also the Control Panel has a lot of nifty featres, logs, stats, scripts, security, etc.
