for some reason, and hour or so after I added a story, now when I go to add another story and hit preview, it takes me back to the home page(index.php), tried it in admin and as if I was submitting astory as a user.????????????????

What vs of Nuke are using? Is it a new install or an upgrade? If it is 6.5 have you added the secfix3?

Have you added any mods to it? WYSIWYG editor? Did you tell it to publish it in articles or somewhere else?

nuke 6.5, has been installed for a few months, haven't added any modules for a while, told it to publish where it always does, had just published 2 articles earlier, not sure what secfix3 is

Secfix3 is available over at Nukecops in the downloads section. It is exactly that a security fix to Nuke 6.5. They also have some other scripts which are very helpful. If you don't already have analyzer etc I suggest you get and install them.

You didn't tell the story to syndicate did you? I've had stories not show up before when I did that.
