Looking for a free apache web server
I appreciate any suggestions.

I'm trying to embed php-nuke into my website and unfortunately my host (yahoo) does not by default have apache php functions. I do have uploading and file managers. If anyone can tell me where I can get a free apache web server and how to install it I would be very grateful.

The ONLY way you can install Apache is if you have your OWN server.
Your webhost will either have it installed or not.

I do not know of any free webhosts since I have never looked for one. I pay for webhosting and it works great. 7.77 a month.

http://www.powweb.com

Right now they have a deal. Pay for a year and get 6 months free. Pay for two years and get 14 months free.
Plenty of bandwidth, plenty of disc space. MySQL etc etc.

I have an account with them and I think the data transfer is something like 300GB/day.

I haven't used it much because my server was always performing like crap but I understand there's been a management shakedown and now their 30% through a major server overhaul.

Does this sound right myrtle?

Actually Duke,

They have changed ownership just recently.

I have been with them over 5 yrs.

Their infrastructure is being migrated ATM, but any new Customers are on to the new infrasturcture immedaitely.

The bandwidth is more than you need as well as the disk space for the price.

Again, it is SHARED HOSTING.

So, you may see some "speed degredation" from time to time during internet browsing peak hours. Other than that, their reliability is great and the fact that they have a support forum is a BIG plus.

IMO. DO NOT GO WITH A WEBHOST THAT DOES NOT HAVE A SUPPORT FORUM!!

Ahh, that makes sense. They've been sending me newsletters or updates but I really haven't looked over it closely.

I really only wanted the account for bandwidth reasons to host video files I create and other dowloads but since the performance was regularily crappy, I stopped using them entirely.

I think I have 6 months left on my contract so once it's gone I don't think I'll be renewing.

Hey guys, just tying up loose ends. I switched to smartlogic. I know this may sound like spam so I'll throw in a naughty word to prove otherwise:

shit

Anyway I've been with Yahoo for like four years and when I checked top rated web hosts Startlogic was #1 on pretty much every list. I signed up. They install everything for you including php-nuke. After working out a few navigation issues with them I nearly peed myself with excitement. It's only 7 bucks a month too.

Sorry if I sound like an ad, but being a site owner I want to let people in on a good deal.

Alright, I'm out.

OMFG!!!!!! PowWeb is WAY more awesome than my SUPER CRAP TASTIC hosting service, Thunderhost.org
Their service was pretty good, but PowWeb is like, 10 times the stuff for less price!

and Thunderhost used to have awesome customer service, untill Kevin sold it and some total jerk took over and doesn't even bother to respond to ANYTHING.

yeah. Once my contract is up next spring, I'm totally converting over.
