Best (Overall) Theme Size (width...) - 04-30-2003, 03:05 AM

My theme was coded at 740 wide, but I don't like things so cramped together. So, I set it up to 850.

From what I hear, most people are now running at 1024X768 resolution, and 800X600 falls in second place.

What size do you think themes work best at?

[I noticed my forums fit on the screen a little better with PHP-Nuke 6.5 if I run at 850 (my desktop res it at 1024X768).]

What happens if you set the theme's width as 100%, rather than using a certain width number (e.g. 850)?

Thanks.

Running the width as percentages is FAR better than fixed widths.
To get the effect of a fixed width you can always try 80-85%

So, if I understand it correctly, if I set the width to 85%, then the site (theme) will present itself to the user at 85% width of his/her present resolution on his/her system? Conversely, if I set the width in my theme to a fixed width of 850, and the user has his/her resolution setup at 640X 480, then the user will be using the bottom scroll bar in the browser to see the remaining width - correct?

Thanks.

Thats correct.

You can also use the percentages outside of nuke.. ie. Frames, tables, and iframes. Basically anything that has a 'width' setting.

Do you think setting the theme width to 100% would be a good idea? I wondered if that would help the theme look good for most users. Or, would that pose a problem for some of the graphics used? I guess I could make sure that the 'headerbar.gif' (for example) is at least 1024 wide, so that it would accomodate the them width. What do you say?

Thanks.

I ususally make my header bg gif 1600px wide that way you know you pretty much will cover all "normal" resolutions.

I have a 22inch monitor at 1600x1024 so I would be onbe of those rare visitors. Not everyone has a friggin TV sitting on the Computer desk..lol
