what software is best to use for making those nice icons and images that are (for example) on this site? :?:

I use Fireworks mostly.

PhotoShop and PantShop pro are good graphics programs as well.

Yes I still play with Barbies..I have a 4yr old little girl...so there's no way out of that one...

and it really depends on what youre comfortable with. ive become accustomed to photoshop, so i use that for all my graphics needs. but fireworks is a great graphics prog as well.

I agree ReN...I would also recommend to anyone that is just starting to try Fireworks before PhotoShop Pro...
Fireworks is a good program and is a little easier to learn to use for a newbie than PhotoShop...IMO.

I've used Photoshop now for a long time and have looked about going over to fireworks, or at least giving it ago...where do you get the images from to actually make the topic images in the 1st place? Or are those made up with Fireworks aswell?

Hopefully, I'm not a n00b poster no-more

All the topic images I have made have been in Fireworks and have been from scratch. Except for the little Icon type images I place in the box.
I create the box and text and basic template then I have a nice library of all those little XP'ish style images to add to them. Like the ones I made for nukecops.
