Topic Category and stuff, please explain
Hi there

I'm more or less new to phpnuke. Finally, I set it up

Now it's time to fill it up with content...and here I could need some explanantations:

As I can see, in the admin area, I can choose either to "Add a story" or to add "Content".

With adding a "story", I'm able to choose an (earlier created) topic for publishing a new article.
With adding "content", I'm able to choose an (earlier created) category for publishing a new page.

So, my question is, how should I start? It's for a page from a waterski-school, so any good exemples could help me a lot...

Another question is how you do it on your pages. Is it better to add new stories or to add new content?

thx a lot

Stories are your News postings that show up on your main page in the middle. If you have News Module in your Home.

Content is for building pages for your Nuke site from scratch. They can contain HTML or whatever.
Those are good to create for basic Information pages, Copyrights, etc.

You'll just have to play around with it...it takes some time to figure out, but you'll get it.

Hi Mikem

So that would mean, that the "Add story"-Button is only to publish News. There, I'm able to choose a created topic.

For the rest, I've to hit the "Content"-Button where I can select a created Category.

What about creating an article which should be listed under a special topic?

greets

You need to create Different topics to put your News(AddStories) under. Helps keep them organized.
To create a new topic, you need a new Topic image first and upload it to your images/topics folder.
Then when you go to Nuke Admin/Topics, in the drop down list you will see the image for your new topic.
Then each time you Create a new story, you would put it under the respective Topic.

Hi Mikem

Yea, that's clear...thx.

But my question is what's the difference between the two ("Add Story" and "Content")

What was the reason to have both of them included in phpnuke?
I've red that a Topic is somewhat like "Dogs" and that a Category could then be f.e. "small Dogs" or "friendly Dogs" and so on.

Isn't that right?

Hi Mikem

Thank you again for your post. I think that the last one wasn't necessary at all cause it didn't help me. Saying two times the same helps noone.

Probably it would help me more if someone could read what I've asked and to answer my questions. If it's not that clear at all, it's because english isn't my normal language.

Ok, back to the roots or my question:

For what did they built "Topics" and "Categories" into phpnuke? As Mikem discribed, the Topics are only used for the news postings (Add Story). The Categories are used for the newly from scratch created pages (Content).
Would it be possible to have an article which is listed under a certain topic and under a certain category?

thx for your help again

OK..Here goes.

First of all. Your question is clear, but I don't think you are understanding the answers...and why did you post this?

Was I rude? or short with you? I don't think so...but I can be if I want

I explained Content and Topics once.

Categories are creted for your Content page.
It's like creating an Outline on a piece of paper.
You have your Top category with more categories under it. Each content page you create, you can add it to the Category that it best matches.
It is all for ORGANIZING your site.
PHP-Nuke is Content management. It's for manageing Content etc.

You REALLY need to play around with it and find out what you can and can't do. You're not going to hurt anything if that's what you are worrried about, but I can't walk you through every little thing, nor can anyone else.

Topics are for Organizing your News or Stories ONLY.
Content and Categories are for Organizing your Content pages ONLY.

To answer your last question there, NO you cannot have a Story(Article) that is listed under a Content Category AND a Topic. The Stories(Articles) only list under TOPICS.

No offense, but you are "making a mountain out of a mole-hill"...if you know what that means. It means you are making this more difficult than it is. It's pretty simple actually. And not just for Advanced users, but it is simple for most anyone.

I'll try to further elaborate

The stories (or what most nukers refer to as News) is for posting things that change alot. For instance you may have many new news stories everyday. But these news stories can be catagorized into topics so that if people wanted to later search for an article they read on your site they can just look at certain topics. Also if someone reads one story that interested them there may be other stories that are of interest to them in that same topic.

Where as the content pages were made to display content for your site that is pretty static and doesn't change daily. They are pretty much like html pages are on a normal site.

So thats why they have two different "content" type systems. And each have thier own way of catagotizing them. But on many peoples sites that catagories might not be the same as the topics they use in thier news postings so that is why one uses catagories and one uses topics.

Does that make anything clearer?

Lastly if you are new to nuke i would highly reccomend going to www.nukecops.com and read the Nuke for Idiots Guide (Don't get mad I'm not saying you are an idiot thats just what they have named it ) It really helps explain alot of the basic nuke concepts.

Good Luck!
